Marina Sirtis, born March 29, 1955, in London, England, is an English-American
actress best known for portraying Counselor Deanna Troi in Star Trek: The Next
Generation and its subsequent films. She has also appeared in Gargoyles, NCIS,
and Picard.
Sirtis grew up in Hackney, London,
as the daughter of Greek Cypriot parents. She secretly auditioned for drama
school against her parents' wishes and was accepted into the Guildhall School of
Music and Drama, graduating in 1976. She began her career in British theater,
performing at the Connaught Theatre before transitioning to television and film.
Her early career included roles in Raffles, Minder,
The Return of Sherlock Holmes, and Death Wish 3 (1985). In 1986, she moved to
Los Angeles, where she struggled for six months before landing the role of
Deanna Troi, the empathic counselor of the USS Enterprise-D, in Star Trek: The
Next Generation (1987–1994). She reprised the role in four Star Trek films and
Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023).
Beyond Star Trek,
Sirtis voiced Demona in Gargoyles (1994–1997) and appeared in Crash, NCIS,
Grey’s Anatomy, and The Orville. She has also been active in theater, starring
in Dark Sublime (2019) in London.
Sirtis was
married to Michael Lamper, a rock guitarist, from 1992 until his passing in
2019. She is a passionate soccer fan, supporting Tottenham Hotspur.
