Defiant Class

Defiant Class Ships

The Defiant class was the first warship Starfleet had built. it was originally built to due to the threat from the Borg.

The Defiant project originally began at Utopia Plantia under the command of Admiral Batelle Ton in 2366. After the U.S.S. Defiant went for its initial shakedown cruise, the ship nearly tore itself apart in full power was tested. Starfleet scrapped the project until the threat of the Dominion began.

The original Defiant was stationed at Deep Space Nine to protect the station and Bajor. With the threat of the Dominion, the Romulan Star government decided to loan Starfleet a cloaking device for the Defiant for intelligence on the Dominion.

The ship was upgraded at Deep Space Nine under the supervision of Chief of Operations Miles O’Brien. Ablative armor was one of the upgrades.

By the time the Dominion war began, Starfleet decided to go into production.

The original U.S.S. Defiant was destroyed during the Second Battle of Chin’toka. Admiral Bill Ross officially renamed the U.S.S. San Paulo to the U.S.S. Defiant.

Two isolinear processing cores are located aft of the Main Bridge on Decks 2 and 3. The storage capacity is 248.47 megaquads.

The primary crew support systems include 22 main cabins, 10 contingency cabins, replicators and sickbay compartments. Crew members can also eat their meals in the wardroom.

The Defiant class weapon systems features four pulse phaser cannons and two torpedo launchers. The launchers could handle both photon and quantum torpedoes.

The Defiant class ships can carry four shuttlepods and one Type 10 shuttle. The shuttlebay is located on Decks 3 and 4. The Defiant class ships feature six and eight person lifeboats. They carry 26 of the six person lifeboats.

The auto-destruct feature is incorporated into two different stages. The Defiant class ships feature an impulse-driven warhead that is detachable from the ship that features six photon torpedo. These warheads can also be used to destruct the ship. If the warhead is deployed, the ship features 16 other photon torpedo warheads. The matter/antimatter safety interlocks are disengaged.

Defiant class ships are heavily armored Starfleet vessels developed at the Antares Fleet Yards. The project officially began in 2366 by Starfleet’s Advances Starship Design Bureau.

The original Defiant NX-74205 was to be built against the Borg, however, it was instead used against the Dominion.

Spacecraft structures

Defiant class ships are constructed of standard tritanium and duranium alloys and composites.

Command systems

Defiant class ships are equipped with battle-ready bridges and ship-wide systems control stations, with the addition of a redundant tactical station designed to handle increased weapons system crew workloads. An integral master situation monitor and conference table allow the crew to study and plan strategies and tactics during reduced action periods. A single forward flight control (CONN) ands operation (ops) station replaces the traditional helm and navigational stations.

Computer systems

Twin isolinear processing cores are situated just aft of the bridge on Decks 2 and 3. The total computer core possesses 675 banks of chromopolymer processing and storage sheets for a total capacity of 246.87 megaquads.

Warp propulsion systems

The warp core is located in the aft engineering section and spans all four decks vertically. The matter-antimatter reaction assembly is embedded within Deck 3, with the surrounding systems balcony above, on Deck 2. Defiant class ships’ maximum warp is 9.982 for 12 hours.

Impulse propulsion systems

The primary impulse system consists of three pairs of redundant fusion reactors, space-time driver coils, and vectored exhaust.

Tactical systems

The greatest technological improvements incorporated into Defiant class ships have been its defensive weapons. These include the ship’s ablative armor pulse phaser cannons, and quantum torpedoes. The original Defiant also had a Romulan cloaking device. All weapons are controlled through the twin bridge tactical systems.

Two torpedo launchers are embedded within the upper forward nacelle cowling.

The ablative armor hull plating has been in development for a number of years. The armor works in two stages; in the event of shield envelope disruption, phaser or thermal EM is first dissipated over the hull surface, and above an undisclosed threshold causes the molecular matrix to boil off at a controlled rate, carrying away a large fraction of the landed beam energy.

Other weapons systems aboard Defiant class ships include the detachable warhead. auto-destruct, and specialized ordnance. The warhead section contains a separate miniature impulse engine and magazine of six photon torpedo warheads. These warheads are also tied into the auto-destruct system. In the event the warhead must be launched, standard command authorization protocols are followed, and the device is fired are armed in transit. The remainder of auto-destruct system consists of 16 additional photon torpedo warheads, plus release, plus commands for all safety interlocks in the matter and anti-matter tankage.

Utilities and auxiliary systems

All standard EPS, fluid transfer, ODN lines, atmospheric, and other energetic and consumable systems are installed aboard Defiant class ships.

Limited-capacity turbolifts provide access to key locations on the ship, primarily along its length. A small number of Jefferies tubes provide access to systems between and behind major compartments and deck structures.

 Communicators

All RF and subspace communications systems are installed, with additional capacity for narrow-beam and encrypted signal transmission and reception.

Transporter systems

Defiant class ships normally carry one primary and one backup transporter on Deck 1.

Environmental systems

Defiant class ships are equipped with a standard suit of Starfleet life support devices and supplies. A normal Class-M environment is maintained, but can be adapted in three of the living quarters for life-forms from Class-H, K, or L worlds.

Crew support systems

The primary crew-support systems include the 22 main crew cabins, replicators, wardroom, and sickbay.

Crew cabins

The crew cabins are equipped with a minimum of 2 bunks, and can be outfitted for as many as 6. for a potential total crew of 192. The normal operational crew is 40.

Sickbay

The sickbay facilities are small, with space for four beds, expandable to six, plus a limited surgical suite.

Wardroom

Two replicators are installed in the wardroom.

Auxiliary spacecraft systems

Defiant class ships can carry up to four small shuttlepods.

Flight operations

All standard flight operational rules are in effect for Defiant class ships, as a single nonseparable interstellar vessel. The current mission types include tactical and defense, emergency and rescue, and secondary science investigations. The operation modes include cruise, yellow alert, red alert, external support, and reduced power.

Emergency operations

Defiant class ships carry 26 of the six-person type lifeboats, which measure 3.6 meters tall 3.5 meters across the hexagonal faces. Each lifeboat contains enough consumables and recycling capabilities to keep the crew alive for eight months, longer with multiple lifeboats connected in standard “gaggle mode”.
